After my recent J Crew collab pickup, I’ve been looking for something a little less pricey but still good from the brand. I saw these go up and these New Balance 57/40 Black Vivid Cactus were picked up on release day!
Theoretically it’s a futuristic take on a New Balance 574, although the resemblence is barely there in my opinion.
These ship in a grey New Balance box and include flat black laces. Other than that, there’s not much happening in terms of extras. One cool detail is “The Intelligent Choice” written on the inside tongue tag. I think pretty much all the attention went to the big N and the multicolor midsole.
At first I grabbed these as a consolation cop after striking out on a pair of Jordan 1s. But now, I’m glad I grabbed these as they are something new and unique for the collection. Normally I avoid non-Made New Balances but I’m happy I took a chance on this pair.
How Are The Materials?
New Balance promised “premium materials” on these and for a $120 shoe, they deliver! Besides the regular mesh, 3M and an inconsequential smooth leather hit on the backtab, these are comprised of soft nubuck and suede. The suede isn’t “Made” quality but it is definitely soft and delivers a backstroke. Meanwhile the nubuck is very soft and reminds me of the nubuck found on Orange Label Nike SB releases. Overall I think for what this shoe costs, it’s definitely a good value on materials!
How Do They Fit?
These New Balance 57/40 Black Vivid Cactus run true to size. The comfort on these feels super basic, just a solid midsole underneath. Not that they’re uncomfy. It’s just not amazing or tech-forward like new models from other brands. To be fair, this is supposedly based on a heritage model with a 90s twist, neither of which scream “modern”.
